Deborah “Debbie” J. (Cergizan) Merchant, 68, of Valparaiso, is now at peace in the arms of the Lord after her brave battle with many adversities and ailments on Monday, March 28, 2022. She was born on January 20, 1954 in Hammond, IN to Emil Cergizan and Geraldine Martin. She graduated from Morton High School and attended EMT training. Debbie spent her professional career as a school nurse, pharmacist technician, and aided her father in the family business, Lindy’s Ace Hardware. She was fond of helping animals through the ASPCA, enjoying her favorite treats of pizza and popcorn, watching HGTV, and was an avid roller-skater. Debbie will be remembered for her strength, determination, and her warm, loving, and caring personality with an unmatched love for her family. She would stop at nothing to care for those around her.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Merchant) Wachowski, and grandson, Brandon Wachowski, and beloved cat, Sylvester, as well as many loving cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Kathy Chansler.
A memorial visitation will be held Friday, April 1, 2022 from 4-6 PM at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with prayers beginning at 6 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
